Psychological Counseling and Psychosocial Support Patients and family members facing a cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery have long recognized the importance of psychological counseling and support. There is strong scientific literature that supports the value of these services in helping patients and family members manage stress and develop good coping skills for navigating through the many phases of cancer care. The Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology is committed to the psychological well being of patients and family members and provides services with a dedicated staff of psychologists and oncology social workers.
We offer the following services: Comprehensive Psychosocial Assessment and CounselingFor UCLA patients and their family members, interventions are provided which are oriented toward reducing the psychological impact of cancer as well as teaching mind-body techniques to facilitate coping and wellness. Psychologists and oncology social workers assist patients and family members both in the Center and in other UCLA oncology clinic environments to help assess needs, identify resources and provide concrete and psychological interventions. Brief psychotherapy and family counseling are available to address cancer related concerns. Referrals are often made to many of the groups and workshops that are offered in the Center. These services are offered on a donation basis rather than with fees. These services are available only to patients who are receiving their primary oncology care at UCLA. Groups and WorkshopsWe also offer an array of groups. A few examples are listed below: Husbands (Partners) of Women with Cancer Support Group – When a woman is diagnosed with cancer it can alter life for both partners, creating parallel journeys. Research indicates that men benefit from other men’s experiences and use the group to find the best ways to support their partners. Young Adults with Cancer – A monthly support group for those who are currently being treated for cancer. Lung Cancer Support Group – A weekly support groups for patients undergoing treatment for lung cancer and their family members. If your doctor has recommended that you see a psychiatrist for medication evaluation or you think you would benefit from seeing one, please contact the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology at (310) 794-6644.
We are please to announce a new fee-for-service program offered through the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology. In cooperation with the UCLA Psychiatry Department, beginning July 1, 2008, Eve Maremont, MD, Psychiatrist, will now have office hours in the Simms/Mann-UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology.
Optimizing wellness after a cancer diagnosis and beyond may include medications that assist with sleep, depression, anxiety, fatigue and other mood changes. It is not unusual for patients and family members to find benefit from specific medications that address mood alterations after a diagnosis and throughout the sometimes lengthy and difficult treatment and reecovery period. Because Dr. Maremont understands cancer treatment and its effects on brain chemistry, she brings a specialized expertise to help patients tailor an individualized plan to help facilitate their wellness. She has specialized training in medications that affect mood, concentration and energy, can evaluate the need for these medications, and can develop an appropriate plan for treatment and follow-up.
Before scheduling an appointment with Dr. Maremont, potential psychiatry patients must first be seen by a Simms/Mann Center clinician. If a medication evaluation from our psychiatrist is appropriate, our clinician will help you obtain an appointment. UCLA Psychiatry will verify coverage, assess the co-payment/fee, and call to schedule the first appointment. Follow-up appointments will be arranged through Dr. Maremont and UCLA Psychiatry. To get more information about this new program, please call the Center. For more information please call (310) 794-6644.
