Getting the best conventional cancer care with leading edge physicians and researchers is the first step in treating cancer.  Beyond conventional care, we believe the best medicine combines multiple modalities and considers the needs of the whole patient and family. At UCLA, a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and resources are available to assist in managing all aspects of the cancer experience.

UCLA Oncology is committed to providing high quality care that offers psychosocial support, education and opportunities to improve wellness.  Our programs address nutrition, dietary supplements, integrative medicine, complementary approaches, psychological counseling and both individual and group support, mind/body interventions, spiritual care, pain management, survivorship concerns, palliative care, genetic counseling, and a host of educational opportunities.

We want to offer you the best of science combined with the most effective complementary approaches that patient-centered care can provide. 

Our center, Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology, offers patients and family members many services that are essential to optimize patients’ wellness.  The mission of the center is:

A center of integrative oncology . . . maintaining wellness, maximizing health, and complementing the best oncologic practices and scientific research through individualized care offered by a multidisciplinary team committed to enhancing the physical, psychological and spiritual well-being of people touched by cancer.

Some of the services that you will find here include:

Nutrition, Dietary Supplements and Complementary Medicine
Two integrative medicine physicians offer both one-on-one education and small group programs to help patients make good, cost-effective choices for complementary care.

Psychological Counseling and Psychosocial Support
Psychologists and oncology social workers provide individual assessment, interventions and referrals for both patients and family members.

Support Groups
Patients may choose from an array of groups that provide opportunities to share experiences, learn meditation or Qi Gong, utilize art to transform the cancer experience, develop mind/body coping strategies and more.

Mind/Body Techniques
Through individual counseling and special groups, patients and family members can find ways to manage stress and achieve a greater sense of well-being.

Pain and Palliative Care
The UCLA Center for East-West Medicine offers acupuncture; the Simms/Mann–UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology offers mind/body techniques and complementary strategies to manage symptoms; the UCLA Division of Geriatrics offers Palliative Care Services. Each of these may be helpful with pain and can augment all pain management strategies.

Family/Caregiver Services
Individual counseling and specific groups for family members and spouses are available.

Reflections Boutique
A boutique to assist patients with the physical appearance changes brought about by cancer including items such as hats, wigs, scarves, mastectomy bras, breast prostheses and lymphedema garments.  Reflections also carries a wide range of high-quality physician-selected dietary supplements of particular interest to people with cancer.

Other Educational Resources
Public lectures, Insights Into Cancer, offered by faculty and other leading professionals in the area of cancer, mind/body medicine, coping and complementary approaches.  We also have a library of resources for patients and family members.

Special Programs in Survivorship
The UCLA–LIVESTRONG Center for Excellence in Cancer Survivorship offers many programs and services for patient who have completed treatment and are dealing with post-treatment concerns and the preservation of their well-being.
